How I Manage Being A Diabetic!
What is Diabetes?
In 2015, late December I learned that I was a Diabetic. More specifically, I learned that I had Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. The body breaks down the sugars and starches you eat into a simple sugar called glucose, which it uses for energy. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs to get glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body.
Before learning what diabetes was, when my blood sugar would drop, I use to call what would happen to me "The Shakes." When my blood sugar dropped (before knowing it dropped) I would start shaking really bad, get really really really hungry, start sweating uncontrollably, and my legs will begin to feel as if I about to pass out. I wouldn't be able to walk a straight and my heart rate would increase rapidly. However; over the years I have manage to keep myself alive and well due to the way I eat, and without taking medication.
I sometimes try to eliminate a large amount of carbs from my diet and I learned that I need them; more than the average person (and not just for Muscle building). I began experimenting with my body and health trying to find that balance that goes hand-and -hand with how I feel on the inside and how I look on the outside. I learned that If I do not eat carbs I am overly sluggish and have zero to no energy, and I learned that by eating them my they help my Ab's look amazing. So I came up with "rotating my carbs." One week for 5 days I will have carbs, but on that Saturday and/or Sunday I will not have them, and the next week I will eliminate them for the next 5 days and only eating them on that week's Saturday and/or Sunday. I found that this works for me.
But there are some times where instead of carbs, I need actual sugar. For this reason, I turn to Justin's Peanut Butter Cups or sometimes Gummy Bears to help give me that boast I need. I use to think Honey would help me out (considering I put it in my coffee), but surprisingly it does not. I get really frustrated because what I have to eat to stay alive sometimes get in the way with my fitness goals, or I can feel like I am doing everything right and out of nowhere that shaking feeling starts happening and I have to scramble for either a banana, a cookie, or a donut, and sit and wait for the next 25-30 minutes for my body to go back to normal.
Being a Diabetic is one of the many reason why I take wellness seriously. Although I feel it should be taking seriously even if I wasn't a Diabetic. But the truth is a lot of us owe it to ourselves to know what is taking place inside of us. It's not always what's on the surface that counts. It's our bloodstreams, our lungs, heart condition and Sugar Levels. There are so many health problems that are connected to how we eat; more specifically, how we as African Americans eat.
According to the American Diabetes Association. Diabetes is one of the most serious health problems that the African American community faces today. Compared to the general population, African Americans are disproportionately affected by diabetes: 13.2% of all African Americans aged 20 years or older have diagnosed diabetes. African Americans are 1.7 times more likely to have diabetes as non Hispanic whites, and I have a theory as to why that is.
